obama officially nominated john brennan to the director of the cia, succeeding retired general david petraeus, who resigned. nickname the assassination czar, brennan was the first obama administration official to publicly confirm drone attacks overseas and to defend their legality. four years ago, john brennan was rumored pick for the cia job when obama was first elected but was forced to withdraw from consideration amid protests over his role at the cia under the bush in ministration. obama also officially nominated chuck hagel to head defense and john kerry to become secretary of state on monday. joining us here in park city, utah, is jeremy scahill, national security correspondent for the nation magazine. he is featured in and co-wrote the new documentary, "dirty wars: the world is a battlefield." book with thest same title is due out in april. we're also joined by the director of the film, rick rowley, independent journalist with big noise films. the film premiered here at the sundance film festival in the u.s. documentary competition section. when we flew in a salt lake city las

overseas. the washington post reports counter-terrorism adviser and cia-nominee john brennan has signed off on a plan to exempt the drone attacks in pakistan from a list of operations that would be covered under newly enacted rules. areas covered in the so-called play book include the process for adding names to kill lists, the principles for killing u.s. citizens abroad, and the command chain for authorizing cia or u.s. military strikes outside war zones. the exemption of drone strikes in pakistan would allow the cia to continue carrying them without -- tearing them without a legal framework for a to two years. the hostage standoff in a jury of his ended in the deaths of dozens of people, including up to 48 of the captured workers. algerian forces say they recovered at least 25 bodies after storming the militant held gas complex saturday, bringing the confirmed death toll to least 80. witnesses say the hostages were brutally executed. the toll could have been worse as hundreds of hostages had earlier managed to escape. a will on islamist fighter has claimed responsibility for the attack on

, like john brennan, which is controversial in some quarters, and john kerry are getting less attention. i would like to comment on the gay rights. i was the only journalist who happened to have written about chuck hagel's views on gay issues years ago because i had conversations with him about my own views that at the time we were still pursuing translators working in intelligence agencies and the defense department and trying to purge them from military service. i had a discussion with him about that and about and don't ask, don't tell. they were attempting to sort out how you would sort through. hagel made clear his support for repealing don't ask, don't tell. i want to be clear that he is saying, and i don't think it is just a move that he has apologized to hormel, and hormel as very graciously accepted his apology, and in addition, senator hagel said he supports lgbt families and the alignment as part of don't ask, don't tell repeal. he also has statements on women's rights and abortion. one of the subjects we do not talk about often is violence against women and in the military, r
the one that's got the toughest road, i think there's criticism of jack lew and john brennan, but also i think especially for chuck hagel as secretary of defense. interestingly enough, he was a former republican senator, and i think he thought he'd get bipartisan support. hagel didn't make a lot of friends among republicans because he was well to the left of them on a lot of foreign policy issues. opposed the troop surge in iraq, and opposed get tough measures against iran. a lot of leading republican senators don't like him. and some top democrats who are at least on the fence about him, because he took -- he made a statement about gays that they didn't like several years back. and also he has not been an unquestioned supporter for israel. i think hagel has the toughest road to go. we'll be talking to two key senators about that and the fight over gun control, which is starting to pick up in the capital. kelly ayotte, rising republican star, and senator from connecticut, blumenthal. >> looks like john kerry is the one that might sail through easier than the other two? >> i think kerry w

will get to that in just a second. but tomorrow is the confirmation hearing on chuck hagle and john brennan. i would imagine, meredith, from your conversations on the hill that it's not going to be as easy sledding for hagle and brennan. >> no. this has been -- this hagel story has been fascinating. i have been covering it for a few weeks now. i wrote this story two weeks ago, i guess it was, three weeks ago, about a stamp sending teams democratic and republican aides alike forwarding anti-hagle articles before his boss came out one way or the other. he hasn't decided where he was falling on hagel. you see all of these back-channel interests trying to influence the vote but at the end of the day i asked senator durbin whether or not democrats were going to basically vote united for hagle. and he said when he whips the vote last week, he hadn't found a single " no" yet. there were a few people who want to wait to see what he said in committee at the armed services hearing but at the most part, everyone is on board. you have to pick off five republican
